“This one goes out to the man who mines for miracles
This one goes out to the ones in need
This one goes out to the sinner and the cynical
This ain’t about no apology”*
I love music. As far back as my memory will reach, I remember loving music. Anybody who knows me personally knows that about me and also knows that … sadly … I cannot sing. Period. And not that I don’t try to sing, because I do. I do try. But I wasn’t blessed with any musical ability at all other than being able to turn on a stereo or create a playlist on iTunes. Nonetheless, notwithstanding my complete lack of vocal talent, I still try to sing. In the shower. When the radio is playing in the car. At the store when a 70’s soundtrack is playing. And when I take my daily walks with earbuds stuffed in my ears drowning out the noise of the outside world while simultaneously rescuing my soul with rock and roll. And I am sure that I both look and sound ridiculous when I take my walks, because I tend to sing at the top of my lungs. From America’s “Sister Golden Hair” to ZZ Top’s “Everybody’s Crazy for a Sharp-Dressed Man” and everything in between. Yes, its kind-of like that. I am; therefore I sing.
And while I can’t help but sing – sorry sweetheart, children, housemates, neighbors, family members, fellow churchgoers on Sunday, local wildlife, etc., etc., – my real musical passion is lyrics. Lyrics are literature for the soul. Some of the most-insightful wisdom; heart-penetrating expressions; thought-provoking lines; and love promoting and uplifting words I have ever read or heard have been masterfully-penned song lyrics.
For me, great music is born of great lyrics. Usually, it is the lyrics of a song that I connect with and which cause me to become a loyal fan of a song or artist. It is the lyrics that cause me to want to share that music with others.
I like to share songs that move me or that I enjoy because of the sheer power, beauty, or truth of their message or their inspired use of language. By sharing songs with others, I get that I am essentially expressing myself – how I think or feel – by way of someone else’s words and hoping that those whom I share with also relate to such words or are equally moved. Selfishly, I want others (read: “you!”) to also like the songs – like the lyrics – that I like. I want them (again, read: “you”) to reap the same emotional or spiritual “benefits” that I have – hope, insight, inspiration, gratitude, perspective, connection, etc.
So, in this section of my blog I share the lyrics of songs that cause me to think, inspire me, or lift me, with the sincere hope that they will do the same for you. I think of these songs, individually and collectively, as a “musical chicken soup for the soul” compilation. Stories about – and prayers for – life, love, hope, and more. Lyrics to live by for both me and you.
